Week 10

Today we got critiques for our packaging and worked on the changes in class. I also decided to use gold foil to make wrappers for each of my packages, as well as cards that people could collect that would be found in the packaging.

My final packaging:

Week 9

Notes from pre-critique in class:

  • Add skin tone to the face
  • Didn’t read it as a beard
    • Texture of the beard and work on beard so skin under the lip
  • Target audience is young so look into making the character different
  • Background texture or some color
  • Wrappers make crown pattern
  • Add name and circle texture to the side
  • Add highlight to the crown
  • Maybe add a box to contain the face color
  • Packaging product pictures and props

Week 7

Tuesday 10/8:
After class last Tuesday I had the idea I would create characters similar to the ones on cards. Looking more into it and I decided to just add the visual of a mouth blowing a bubble. I wanted to then have the words be created by the bubble they blow and still have every person different. It is still going with the idea of playing cards but adding small icons to indicate King, Queen and Joker instead of having a full figure. I also drew out different designs for the back and have not decided which one I think works best yet.

Thursday 10/10:
I have been working on vectorizing my designs. There have been multiple sizing issues so I decided to print it and construct the package to make sure what I was doing thus far was working.

Week 6 - Creative Brief

Thursday 10/3:

Title:
Series packaging for the gum company, Chewz.

Introduction:
Chewz is a company that focuses on its consumers choosing their own flavor whether it be by luck or the buyer's choice. We strive to make buying gum a fun experience and hope that our boxes can be collectable similar to other sets of playing cards.

User and Target Audience Groups:
The target audience I am looking to focus on is elementary or middle school children.

Brand Attributes, Promises and Mission:
This company will start a new trend in the gum industry. The goal is to make the packages collectable and more interactive then just a case for gum.

Competitive Landscape:
Other competitors tend to stick with colors and visuals associated with the flavor. I plan to use these aspects in my design as well, but not for my whole design. Brands also seem to use circular shapes along their packaging to associate themselves with bubble gum since you blow a circular bubble. The brands I looked at are Extra, Orbit, 5 and Trident.

Business Objectives (Success Criteria):
I plan to create a design that is different from the circular designs gum packages have, but include color and iconography that a consumer can recognize and associate with gum.

Creative Strategies:
I plan to differentiate my packaging from other gum packages as well as differentiate the design. I also plan to still have similar aspects in my design as other companies do such as color and iconography because consumers will be able to recognize that it is gum on the shelf.

Functionality Specifications:
I plan to design the package around a cigarette package design. This will simulate a card box and will give the design on the back a cleaner look then if it were a regular gum package.

Week 6

Tuesday 10/1:
My plan is to go with a gum package or soap package series. For the gum package I wanted to go along the lines of holiday themed. The packaging would be like a present and would go with the campaign Extra has of "give Extra, get Extra". The soap I do not have a set concept for yet but would like to go with more fruity scents.

Based off the feedback I got from class I am deciding to go with "Chewz" and play off the concept of playing cards. Someone suggested to make the king, queen and jack blowing bubbles of gum on the cards. I am also thinking that they can open and close similar to a cigarette box and looks similar to a card box.
