Creative Brief:

Title:
It is a kit that one would get on an airplane filled with essentials for the ride called "Let's Take Flight"

Introduction:
Let's Take Flight is a company that focuses on giving their customers essentials for their flight. We want to make the plane ride a more enjoyable experience for others.

User and Target Audience Groups:
The target audience I am looking to focus on are children who fly and need items to keep them occupied during the flight.

Brand Attributes, Promises and Mission:
This company will start a new trend in the airline industry. The goal is to make the kits that children would be able to customize themselves and make their flight more enjoyable as children at times get stressed on the plane. Also it would provide the essentials such as gum, snacks, crayons and airplane activities such as a word search, stickers and a coloring page.

Competitive Landscape:
Other competitors just provide flyers with snacks and beverages from a cart, but my plan is to take this experience and make it more personalized to the customer. The customer can still get a snack  while having things such as gum and an activity booklet to keep them occupied on the plane.

Business Objectives (Success Criteria):
I plan to create a design that mimics an old time briefcase since they were decorated with patches and the child could decorate it with stickers.

Creative Strategies:
I plan to differentiate my packaging from other airline packaging as well as differentiate the design. I also plan to still have similar aspects in my design as other companies do such as color and iconography because consumers will be able to recognize that it is for the airplane.

Functionality Specifications:
I plan to design the package around a briefcase package design. This will make it easier for customers to get the items considering the space is so small while sitting in the seats.

Comparisons:
Most packaging with the slidable feature are used for cards for people to have easy access to their items which can apply to my airplane kit. I want to make it as easy to access items as possible considering how crammed airplanes are.

Week 14

I changed my concept to being targeted more towards younger kids riding on a plane. I wanted to make the packaging itself mirror a old time suitcase. The kit would include an activity book with stickers to put on the kit, a snack, crayons and gum or mints for take off.











The stickers will look like postage stamps, camera, different places they could be visiting and other travel items to color and stick on their briefcase.

Week 13

The target audience I am looking to focus on are all people who fly and have forgotten different items.

Brand Attributes, Promises and Mission:
This company will start a new trend in the airline industry. The goal is to make the kits customizable to every place one flies by adding cards with places to visit where they are going. Also providing the essentials such as water, gum, snacks and airplane activities.

Competitive Landscape:
Other competitors just provide flyers with snacks and beverages from a cart, but my plan is to take this experience and make it more personalized to the customer. The customer can still get a snack and water while having things such as headphones, gum and places to visit to look at on the plane.

Business Objectives (Success Criteria):
I plan to create a design that is different from the standard airline snack packages and make the packaging have an intriguing yet simple design.

Creative Strategies:
I plan to differentiate my packaging from other airline packaging as well as differentiate the design. I also plan to still have similar aspects in my design as other companies do such as color and iconography because consumers will be able to recognize that it is for the airplane.

Functionality Specifications:
I plan to design the package around a briefcase package design. This will make it easier for customers to get the items considering the space is so small while sitting in the seats.

I am still working through my ideas with my packaging. I plan to create a mockup of the packages and items, but also print any logos and such that I might have within the kit.

After sketching I decided to base my kit more targeting younger kids going on a plane as the audience. So in the kit I would include an activity booklet, snack, gum or mints and stickers to put on the kit itself.

  • What did you learn that you did not already know
I did not know that there was a 100% recyclable, flexible, stand-up pouch. In relation to this new fully recyclable pouch, it was interesting to see that life cycle assessments are done to see how much fossil fuels are used, greenhouse gases and the amount of water the packages use. The 100% recyclable pouch was assessed as using less fossil fuels, has a good ratio of product to packaging, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and uses less water.

  • How did the article help you think about your next project?
For my next project I was looking to include some sort of food a person could eat on the plane, so this sort of packaging could be similar to what my food is packed in. The article mentioned that they made more packaging and one was for peanuts which is a good size for travel.

  • Highlight three things from the article you think is important. 
  1. Life cycle assessments assess fossil fuels used, greenhouse gases emissions, ratio of product to packaging and the amount of water the production uses. 
  2. There is a growing interest in sustainable packaging. Customers gain their sustainability targets from either New Plastics Economy Global Commitment or their Corporate Social Responsibility Plan.
  3. The interest that consumers have in the idea of recycling. Consumers are demanding sustainable products that can be recyclable or compostable and want to know how recycling works. They also have interest in how they can make a significant impact which leads to opportunities in design to educate them.
  • What did you learn that you did not already know
I did not know that a lot of printing partners are reluctant in printing on 100% recyclable material. I would think that they would want to print on this because consumers are becoming more interested in the topic of recyclable items. The one thing they say with printing on that kind of material is that it is too expensive and causes printing issues, so I can partially see why companies have issues with it.

  • How did the article help you think about your next project?
It made me think of the fact that everything can be made as 100% recyclable. A big thing I can incorporate into my kit is the idea of educating others on the recycled materials used. I want to design things in a way that containers could be reusable and the packaging could be recyclable. 

  • Highlight three things from the article you think is important. 
  1. By educating others about the recyclability of the brand's products it can show that a brand cares. This is a great way for the brand to build trust with its consumers and can drive the value of recycled plastics up which will give incentive for people to collect plastic waster.
  2. Keenan stated three things to look at when sourcing packages with recycled content. The three things are Lowering our "bunny footprint" or how the brand communicates our overall carbon footprint while maintaining a safe product. Another is being a leader and having a competitive advantage with various packaging and lastly educating consumers. 
  3. To overcome the challenge of recycled-content material in product packaging  designer must educate brand marketers on the value of a "closed-loop system" and find a cost effective and reliable supply of recycled materials.

  • What did you learn that you did not already know
Many consumers are concerned about the impact that single-use plastic packaging has on the environment. 61% of consumers said they are hyper aware of the current climate surrounding plastic packaging.

  • How did the article help you think about your next project?
 This helps me understand more of the concerns with plastic packaging from a consumers view. It will help me make sure to not integrate anything plastic within my kit. 

  • Highlight three things from the article you think is important. 
  1.  61% of consumers said they are hyper aware of the current climate surrounding plastic packaging.
  2. Two thirds of respondents say disposable plastic packaging is getting worse than it has ever been and 82% say this problem will continue to escalate.
  3. 89% of survey respondents say that they have faith that recycling can have a positive impat on marine debris.

Week 10 - Final

Creative Brief:

Title:
Series packaging for the gum company, Chewz.

Introduction:
Chewz is a company that focuses on its consumers choosing their own flavor whether it be by luck or the buyer's choice. We strive to make buying gum a fun experience and hope that our boxes can be collectable, similar to other sets of playing cards.

User and Target Audience Groups:
The target audience we focus on are elementary or middle school children.

Brand Attributes, Promises and Mission:
This company will start a new trend in the gum industry. The goal is to make the packages collectable and more interactive then just a case for gum.

Competitive Landscape:
Other competitors tend to stick with colors and visuals associated with a certain flavor. These aspects are shown in our designs as well, but not for the whole design. Brands also seem to use circular shapes along their packaging to associate themselves with bubble gum since you blow a circular bubble. Competitive Brands are Extra, Orbit, 5 and Trident.

Business Objectives (Success Criteria):
Chewz has a design that is different from the circular designs gum packages have but include color and iconography that a consumer can recognize and associate with gum.

Creative Strategies:
This packaging is different from other gum packages. There will be similar aspects in Chewz designs like other companies do, such as color and iconography because consumers will be able to recognize that it is gum on the shelf.

Functionality Specifications:
The design of the package will be based on a cigarette package design. This will simulate a card box and will give the design on the back a cleaner look then if it were a regular gum package.

Comparisons:
The brand takes gum to another level and creates a collectable experience with including customized wrappers and cards that are unique to each package. The competitors do include similar patterns and shapes on their designs, but Chewz creates a collectable experience like no other.

Critiques:
  • To push concept further, put more than one card in each pack and maybe mix up cards so every pack had a different set. 
    • Make it so eventually a buyer could get all 52 cards and be able to play with them
    • Could also make the flap have a sticker instead of cards
  • Make the Queen card color a little redder. It seemed pink in the print out
  • Add a pattern to the top
  • Maybe include something somewhere on the box as well about games to play with all the cards a person can collect

Week 10

Today we got critiques for our packaging and worked on the changes in class. I also decided to use gold foil to make wrappers for each of my packages, as well as cards that people could collect that would be found in the packaging.
